Physical Rehabilitation Therapy

Canine Rehabilitation at the Good Dog Spa provides the same high quality care we expect for ourselves after an injury. Rehabilitation is a vital part of recovery following an orthopedic, musculo-skeletal, or neurological injury or event. By working closely with our team at Wigram Vet, Kate will provide an individualised program to get your pet back on all four paws again.

Our rehabilitation services are beneficial for a wide variety of pets to improve their mobility and quality of life.

  •  Senior Pets with arthritis – We can improve their strength, mobility and vitality.
  • Agility Dogs – improve their strength, fitness and condition, while providing you with a full body assessment before events.
  • Ex-Racing Greyhounds
  • Working Dogs – Farm, Search and Rescue, Police Dogs.
  • Cats – with orthopedic, musculo-skeletal or neurological conditions

Hydrotherapy – Underwater Treadmill

The AQUATREAD canine underwater treadmill provides a controlled environment for the physical rehabilitation and conditioning of canine patients.

Exercising on the Aquatread uses the buoyancy of water to minimise weight-bearing on joints, and reduces stress on tissues, allowing the patient to exercise more comfortably.  It assists the patient to exercise in an upright position encouraging confidence, normal posture and gait pattern. Resistance provided by the water strengthens and tones the muscles and improves the patient’s cardiovascular fitness. This promotes an earlier return to normal function after injury or surgery.

Water pressure has a compressive effect, which helps reduce blood pooling and oedema in the lower limbs. It also decreases the activity of pain receptors, thus assisting with pain management. Moreover, exercising in warm water stimulates the release of endorphins and enkephalins in the brain which enhances mood and further assists with pain management.

The operator-controlled environment allows each patient’s program to be customised. Adjustable settings on the speed of the belt, water levels, inclines and water jets, can create new challenges for the patient’s individual needs.
